What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown (also called a cap) is a tooth-shaped covering that completely encases a damaged tooth, restoring it to its original shape, size, and strength. Unlike dental fillings that fill a cavity, crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.

At Radiant Smiles, our crowns are laboratory-produced using premium zirconia material, offering superior strength and a natural appearance that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

When You Need a Dental Crown:

  • Broken or Cracked Teeth – Restores structural integrity and prevents further damage
  • Large Fillings – Protects teeth with extensive fillings that prevent them from breaking or falling out
  • After Root Canal Treatment – Strengthens and protects the treated tooth
  • Severely Decayed Teeth – Rebuilds teeth damaged by extensive decay
  • Cosmetic Enhancement – Improves the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth
  • Supporting Dental Bridges – Anchors bridge restorations for missing teeth
  • Dental Implant Crowns – Complete implant restorations with a natural-looking tooth

With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns typically last 10-15 years, though many of our Perth patients enjoy their crowns for 20 years or longer.

The Dental Crown Process at Perth Clinic

Getting a dental crown takes just 2 appointments over 2-3 weeks. The process is comfortable and straightforward.

Appointment 1: Preparation (45-60 minutes)

  • Examination & Planning:
We assess your tooth, discuss options, and may take X-rays to check the root and surrounding bone.
  • Tooth Preparation:
Using a local anesthetic for your comfort, we shape the tooth to create space for the crown. If your tooth is damaged, we may need to build it up with filling material first.
  • Impressions:
We take precise molds of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. These are sent to our Australian dental laboratory, where your custom crown will be crafted.
  • Temporary Crown:
A protective temporary crown is placed and secured with temporary cement. This protects your tooth for the next 2-3 weeks.
  • Color Matching:
We carefully select the shade that matches your surrounding teeth perfectly.

Appointment 2: Crown Placement (30-45 minutes)

  1. Fitting Your Permanent Crown
We remove the temporary crown, clean the tooth, and carefully try on your permanent crown to check fit, shape, and color.
  2. Final Adjustments
We ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable. Any necessary adjustments are made before permanent bonding.
  3. Permanent Cementation
Once you’re happy with the fit, the crown is permanently bonded in place using strong dental adhesive.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Any sensitivity typically subsides within a few days.

Types Of Dental Crowns in Perth

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is our preferred material for most crowns.

Benefits:

  • Stronger than porcelain – Ideal for both front and back teeth
  • Biocompatible – No adverse reactions, metal-free
  • No temperature sensitivity – Doesn’t transmit hot/cold like metal crowns
  • Natural appearance – Precisely color-matched to your teeth
  • Long-lasting – 10-15+ years with proper care
  • Resistant to wear – Won’t chip or crack easily

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal

Metal base with porcelain outer layer. Strong and more affordable, but the metal line may show if gums recede over time.

All-Porcelain Crowns

Best aesthetic option for front teeth. Most natural translucency, but not as strong as zirconia for heavy chewing forces.

Which crown is right for you?

During your free consultation, we’ll recommend the best option based on the tooth location, your bite, aesthetic needs, and budget.

Dental Crowns Perth FAQs

How painful is getting a dental crown?

The procedure is not painful. We use an effective local anesthetic to numb the area completely. You may feel slight pressure during tooth preparation, but no pain. After the anesthetic wears off, you may have mild sensitivity for 1-3 days, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. The second appointment for permanent crown placement is typically quick with minimal discomfort. Most patients report it’s much easier than expected.

Will my dental crown look natural?

Yes! Modern dental crowns are custom-made to match the exact color, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. We take great care in color matching using professional shade guides and natural lighting. Our laboratory creates crowns with natural color gradations and translucency. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference between your crown and natural teeth.

Can I eat normally with a dental crown?

Yes! Once your permanent crown is in place and cement has set (24 hours), you can eat normally. Crowns restore 90-95% of natural chewing ability. We recommend avoiding extremely hard foods (ice, hard candy) and being cautious with very sticky foods initially. Your temporary crown requires more care – avoid sticky and hard foods on that side.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. Root canal teeth become brittle after losing their internal blood supply and are more susceptible to fracture. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure. Without a crown, the tooth has a much higher risk of breaking – often requiring extraction. For back teeth (molars and premolars), a crown is strongly recommended to protect your investment in the root canal treatment.

What if my temporary crown falls off?

Don’t panic – this is not an emergency, but call us soon at (08) 9440 3654. We’re open 7 days and can see you quickly. In the meantime:

  • Keep the crown safe and bring it with you
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Keep the area clean with gentle brushing
  • Temporary dental cement (available at pharmacies) can hold it temporarily

Temporary crowns are held with weak cement and can loosen from eating sticky foods. We can quickly re-cement it or make a new one if needed.
